The Pocket Coach
“I must convince myself that there is no substitute for hard work and discipline. The pay-off for anything comes from a day to day commitment. That makes you world class…unbeatable.”
There’s an old saying, “If you talk the talk, you should walk the walk.” If ever a statement epitomised the life of an individual, this was the living mantra of Coach Dick Hensley. For those of us who knew him, not only did he practice what he preached, ‘Deacon Dick’ spoke with the voice of rolling thunder with a hint of Rhett Butler for good measure. His southern lilt had a way of emphasising a turn of phrase in a way that could inspire his students to want to learn, his teams to crave success and his children to desire to be better people. I should know, because the ‘Silver-Haired Mentor’ was my father.
When I was fourteen, my father gifted me with one of the most valuable possessions I have ever owned; a pocket-sized prayer book. I can vividly remember helping to hand write the contents of Dad’s prayer book into three identical paperback copies so that he could gift one to each of my brothers and my sister. It was the first time that I read the book in its entirety, and it was also the initial moment that I truly appreciated my father’s way with words. I had listened to him in the pulpit for my entire life, but when I actually read his impressions; my passion for stirring the souls of others was ignited. I ended up with a hardback copy that Dad had written for me in his own distinctive cursive style, back in 1984. There was a sticker on the front cover that simply stated:
“I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
The first page inside was inscribed with:
“To My Darling Daughter,
With the firm conviction that she will be an eagle, not a parrot.
I love you. Dad”
The Chakra Fairies: A Magical Mantra for Children
“Indigo blue is filling the room
And that small voice inside
you now speaks with a boom
The Sixth Chakra Fairy
softly whispers in your ear
Keeping you safe and
removing your fears”
The Chakra Fairies is a children’s book written and illustrated with the specific aim of introducing the concept of chakras to children – but in a fun and imaginative way. In Indian thought, chakras refer to each of seven centres of spiritual power in the human body. The 7 Chakras are the energy centres in our body in which energy flows through. Blocked energy in our 7 Chakras can often lead to illness so it’s important to understand what each Chakra represents and what we can do to keep this energy flowing freely. The fairy illustrations were drawn and coloured by Mary Helen’s two children, Jemma and Jada with poetic text written by Mary Helen.
